Prices Explanation
I price my artwork the way I have because regardless of talent, working on a commission takes time - time I could be spending with my family and friends. My time is not free, and often I have very little of it. So, no, prices are not negotiable. Often even a simple sketch can take upwards of 6-9 hours to complete... double that for inking... triple for colors. While I like to offer cheap commissions, I am well aware of how long it takes me to do a suitable piece of art that is up to my own standards, and I do not want to waste my entire day doing art I may not even really want to do, for pocket-change.
That being said, prices were set according to difficulty and the estimated time it would take to do each type of piece. The more difficult the picture, the more it costs. Yes, that is why it costs so much to add backgrounds or more characters to commissions. It's twice, sometimes triple the work of a single-character no-background image, so it's price was adjusted accordingly.
Quality
Please, look over my most recently dated pieces so that you know what you are getting into should you commission me. It doesn't take a genius to understand that I'm not an epic artist. I have things I do not draw well. Yes, I will draw them if you ask me to; I will honestly put forth my utmost effort - but do not expect the outcome to be as good as if I were to draw something I am very proficient at drawing. I haven't had the practice.
What I Will/Won't Draw
I will draw anything. Yes, anything. I might not like drawing it, I may not be good at drawing it, but if you ask, I will try my best to live up to my usual standards.
Turning Down Commissions
I reserve the right to turn down commissions at any time. Sometimes I am very busy, other times I may just not like your attitude. I can, and will turn down your commission on a whim if I so feel like it. (This doesn't happen often.)
Payment
All payments MUST be made before I will begin work on your commission. My time is not free. If I choose not to finish your commission, I will refund your payment. If you recieve your commission and don't like it, we will discuss the issue. I'm not opposed to fixing small issues with a commission if I can, but I will not redo an entire piece (after checking with you every step of the way to make sure you're happy) because you suddenly decide to be fickle. This is why I state at the very beginning of "Quality" on this page, that you must take it upon yourself to know my capabilities before hand, so you know what to expect. Don't expect a miracle and then demand a refund. Whether you like it or not, I put a lot of effort into the art I create, and I am entitled to payment for that work.
Internet Requests: I accept PAYPAL. US DOLLARS ONLY. I may on occassion trade commissions for DeviantART subscriptions or points. ASK.
Offline Requests: I accept PAYPAL. US DOLLARS ONLY. If you are a personal friend of myself or my family, I will also accept Cash. An e-mail address must be provided where I can send the finished commission, and any inquiries pertaining to the commission.
Commission Format
All commissions are given in digital-art form. (.jpg, .psd, .png, .gif... whatever you prefer). I do not ship hard copies of my art - so don't ask. My artwork is done digitally, and if any hard-copies do exist, I keep them for myself as proof that the artwork is my own should any art-theft issues arise. Usually my canvase size is around 1-4k pixels in size depending on what was drawn, and it is later shrunk down for gallery use. You may request any size version you wish for your commission - just ask ahead of time.
Watermarks
I do not watermark my artwork. I do, however, provide a signature. YOU MAY NOT REMOVE MY SIGNATURE. Ever. I don't care what you paid for the image... I drew it. I want credit. If for some reason you want a version of the commission without a signature (and you can give me a good reason for it) I will consider leaving it off. Credit would still have to be given anywhere the artwork is exhibited, however.
Copyrights
You may do whatever you wish with your commissioned image as long as you do not remove the signature, and remember to credit the artist (Cary A. Morton). I don't care if you make prints of it, sell it, or put it in a gallery/professional website or business. I couldn't care less as long as I recieve the credit for the work. As the artist, I retain copyright of the work itself - I am just giving you exclusive permission to do with it as you will. I reserve the right to post the commission work on my website or in my online galleries, but I will not sell the image in any capacity. If you do not wish me to post the artwork in a gallery or on my website (because it is going to be used commercially for a business or it is a very personal piece) just ask, and I may be willing to keep it from my gallery exhibitions out of respect for the customer and the subject.
How Long Does A Commission Take?
I will try my best to finish each commission in a timely manner, and with the utmost effort I am capable of providing. However, occasion may arise in which I must put off work for a couple of days. Please be understanding of these delays. I will do my best to keep you informed of any and all work on your commission so that you know exactly where I stand on it's completion. I hate to put a time-frame on art, because depending on the subject it may take more or less time, but usually sketches take 1 day to complete, lineart 2-3 days, and colored pieces range from 3-7 days.
Artistic License
I reserve the right to artistic liscence. If you ask for a certain type of picture or pose, I will try my best to accomplish what you ask, but I do like to experiment and change details. It's fun, and keeps me interested in the work I am doing. If you have any objections to my artistic license: voice your concerns early. For instance: if the commission is for a book cover, you may want the characters portrayed to some specification - and I will comply to your request, but if you are not detailed neough in your description of what you want, or you aren't sure and say somethign to the effect of "I just want a Waist Up of this character..." expect random creativity. The more creative leeway you give me, the better your commission will probably turn out.
What Mediums Do You Use?
On occassion I use regular printer paper and a mechanical pencil to do my sketch work, but more often than not the commissions I do are done entirely on the computer in PaintTool SAI and Adobe Photoshop CS5 with a Wacom Graphire 4 Pen Tablet.
I am Currently NOT Offering...
Complex backgrounds or realism commissions (pictures with no inked lines). Such pieces can take several weeks to finish, and I am not yet confident enough in my ability to do either in order to open commissions for them. I would like more practice. These options may become available in the future.
How To Commission Me
You may send a note to DarlingMionette on DeviantArt, or an e-mail to cary_morton@hotmail.com with the subject line "COMMISSION". Please send a thorough description of the commission you would like, and any pertinent details. Please be as detailed as possible. I don't want to have to e-mail you 20 times in order to figure out what you would like. I will then confirm that you understand the price of the commission and have read the entirety of this commission page. If you agree to my terms, I will give you the e-mail I use for PAYPAL so that payment can be made, and I can begin work on your commission. (My PAYPAL email is NOT my main e-mail address, so please don't send payment to the above posted e-mail address.) Don't be afraid to ask any questions you may have, I don't mind answering them, and I want both of us to be clear on the commission process before any transactions are made. I will try my best to give you an estimate on how long it will take for me to finish your commission. Depending on the size and detail involved, pieces usually take me 10-47 hours of straight work (up to a week in real time because I need to eat and sleep, and live life in general).
In case you need to check my credentials, the people listed below have all commissioned me in the past, and their commissions have been completed. You may ask them for confirmation of my work ethic and honesty.
